F#A#∞
ALBUM
COVER

a dark wind does indeed blow.

I'm here for it though, to be honest. I was practically giddy with joy when I got to work on this album cover. I listened to it basically the whole time.

F#A#∞ by Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a melancholic and somber medley with an eclectic style, sometimes quickly shifting from monologues to ambient, drone, and even western-themed melodies.

My designs all revolved around collapsing structures and dilapidated landscapes with few organic forms; a reflection of the album's core themes of urban decay.

I focused on artificial or angular forms, with few organic shapes and absolutely no animals or other living things, in order to evoke a sense of alienation, stillness, lifelessness.

While ideating, I hit upon a motif that really resonated with the music itself: an image of collapsing structures and barren horizons that converges into a simple, straight line—just as intense instrumentals and imagery give way to beautifully simple, slow, and somber notes.

I made sure to emulate its themes in the typography as well, using thin weights with high tracking to impart a sense of lethargy and isolation.

The typography in general is meant to be very subdued and quiet, as it fits the album very well and I feel like the fans would appreciate that creative decision.

One problem that I had with typography, though, was that my chosen typeface had no "infinity" symbol. Oh no. Luckily, I thought fast, and ripped a fresh, beating infinity symbol from a similar typeface.
